I don't understand computers,

Woke up this morning, turned on the computer and everything was gone, worked for almost two hours to get some important info back didn't even try to get any pictures retrieved, managed to configure outlook again, had lost all of my old emails and business plans, invoices, receipts, etc... computer freezes up completely I wait approximately 1 hour had my first cup of coffee and went outside came back it and started the computer back up took almost 1/2 hour to start up but up pops my old desktop with everything back in its place
